The General Naturopathic Council, as the Standards Body, has established Core Elements for Naturopaths. Individuals who are entitled to become members of the GNC will have trained and will practice to a minimum of the levels set out in the Core Elements. Please click here to view the Core Elements document.
The GNC will shortly be ready to open its Register to practitioners. Individuals who belong to any one of the GNC's Professional Associations (as listed on the 'Members' page of this website) will be able to apply for GNC registration.
The GNC Register will have two-tiers: the upper tier (Registered Naturopaths) is for eligible practitioners who hold a Naturopathic Diploma and who demonstrate they work within the Naturopathic National Occupational Standards (NOS). The second tier is for eligible practitioners who don't have a Naturopathic Diploma but who meet sufficient of the GNC's Core Elements, and who demonstrate they work within the NOS; they will be registered as Associate Naturopaths. The aim for registrants on this second tier is that they will complete 'missing' elements within a given period of time in order to upgrade to the status of Registered Naturopath.
Member organisations may need to make adjustments to their Constitutions in order for GNC registrants to work in accordance with the GNC's Codes of Conduct and Professional Ethics. It is anticipated these organisations will seek ratification of amendments from their members in early to mid 2010, allowing the GNC Register to become operative at that time.
